This rose is known as the French rose, but I prefer its more unusual, popular name — the inside-out rose. There is something almost unnatural about its beauty: petals opening too widely, curling into unexpected shapes, as though someone had decided what a rose should look like. The flowers waited several days in my studio to have their portrait painted. During that time, they even moved from a vase into a smaller glass. I began with watercolour — transparent, fluid, with blurred edges and shapes that seem to dissolve into the background. Then soft pastel brought density, texture, and an almost tangible quality to the petals. I wanted to preserve this contrast: the physical presence of the flowers and the uncertainty of the space around them. Something clear enough to almost feel beneath your fingertips, alongside something elusive.

A rose in a glass. On its inside-out petals the light still lingers.
